MyoChip - Builduing a 3D innervated and irrigated muscle on a chip
Did you know that our body contains about 670 muscles? Knowing how diverse and vast human activities are, one can easily imagine how one muscle dysfunction can greatly impair life. Understanding muscles deep mechanisms will uncover massiveknowledges concerning plenty of areas: neuromuscular genetic disorders, drug testing, prosthetics and bio robotics andin vitromeat. The MyoChip project aims to build a 3D human skeletal muscle that is vascularized by vessels and innervated by neurons, within a fully customizablebiological micro system. While easier to study than complex animal models,yet much more realistic than 2D petri dishes models, the reconstituted 3D muscle-on-chip technology will mimic in vivoconditions: shape, microenvironment,multi cellularinteractionsand contractility.Vasculature with blood-vessel like structures and innervation with motor neurons will bring even more relevance to our 3D skeletal muscle model. The final objective of our project is to create a strong 3D model for skeletal muscle fundamental sciences as well as laying down scientificbreakthroughsfor future complex organ-on-chip technologies.
